From creative intent to a production plan

A Film School and production workspace for planning AI video: project briefs, a Production Bible, scene slates, and prompts prepared for generation tools.

Explore the case study outline

The challenge. Help creators express a visual idea in concrete production terms before generating footage.

The documented workflow. Define a project, establish a Production Bible, specify six scene fields, review direction, and export prompts. Clip generation happens in a chosen video tool; editing follows separately.

Design evidence to present. Navigation and information hierarchy, progressive guidance, field labels, validation feedback, and the connection between filmmaking instruction and production decisions.

Needed: current project link; Film School, Project Brain, Scene Slate, and Prompt Studio screenshots; one short walkthrough; confirmation of your specific design and development contributions.

A visual language for live conversation

Show graphics and segment identities across SCN Canal Zone, Happy Hour @ The Balboa Yacht Club, and the rebranded CZ Live.

Context. Weekly programming combines conversation, news, history, and audience participation.

Design evidence to present. Title sequences, lower thirds, guest layouts, segment transitions, and graphics shown in their actual broadcast context. Evaluate readability at mobile viewing sizes and consistency across scenes.

Needed: two or three episode links with start/end timestamps; clean graphic exports; your contribution and any collaborator credits.

Excavating the Impossible documentary composite: Canal construction backdrop with four inset images comparing source footage and historical recreations of an operator and shovel equipment.Documentary project

Making an engineering story visible

Panama Canal storytelling centered on the railroads, logistics, and support systems behind construction, including Culebra Cut visual recreations.

Context. Translate historical research into visual sequences an audience can understand.

Design evidence to present. Reference selection, composition, machinery proportions, environmental continuity, and corrections between generations. The CZ Community environment model is also being adapted into a construction-era supporting piece with working equipment models in development. Distinguish source photographs from illustrative reconstructions.

Needed: a finished excerpt; original reference and early output; final revision; source credit and a brief explanation of your corrections.

One identity, many stories

A network concept connecting Canal Zone history, Panama, community, and contemporary programming through a shared visual identity.

Teach at the speed of play

A social poker experience with a companion coaching concept: brief, visual guidance that helps new players while keeping the game moving.

Documented design direction. Introduce all four foundational concepts during each of the first four nights, with rotating emphasis. Keep contextual prompts brief, conversational, and visually recognizable.

Design evidence to present. Coaching placement, accessible icon labels, table visibility, prompt timing, and the tradeoff between helpful instruction and interruption.

Needed: current table screenshot, coaching example, short interaction demo, and a clear list of implemented versus planned features.

Recreating the Canal Zone, 1977: a black-and-white Balboa Theater image beside a color virtual rendition, with additional Canal Zone reference scenes. In development

Recreating a place. Bringing its history to life.

A virtual recreation of the Canal Zone as it appeared in 1977, with the environment model also being adapted into a supporting visual piece for Excavating the Impossible.

CZ Community: the 1977 Canal Zone. Reconstruct familiar places through period maps, terrain, architecture, landmarks, and spatial relationships. The project brings historical research and visual design together in a coherent virtual environment.

A shared foundation for the documentary. Adapt the environment model to depict the Canal construction era, changing terrain, infrastructure, buildings, and equipment to fit the period. The 1977 recreation and construction-era documentary piece represent distinct historical settings.

Working equipment models in development. Rail locomotives, steam engines, and coal shovelers extend the environment into demonstrations of how construction machinery worked. The case study will pair model views with motion demonstrations and historical references.

Design evidence to present. Map-to-environment comparisons, terrain and building proportions, equipment silhouettes, materials, mechanical movement, and clear visual explanations of construction processes. Show how research and critique guide successive refinements.

Needed: 1977 environment screenshots or a flythrough; a construction-era scene; locomotive, steam engine, and coal shoveler model views or motion clips; source references; your contributions and each model’s current working status.

02 / Design judgment

A good-looking output
is the starting point.

Strong work also needs to communicate clearly, fit its context, and hold up in use.

01 / Evaluate

Find the real problem.

Check hierarchy, type, spacing, color, composition, accuracy, and readability against the brief and intended viewing conditions.

02 / Explain

Make feedback useful.

Name the issue, identify its effect on the audience, and give a specific correction that another creator can apply.

03 / Refine

Show a stronger result.

Keep the initial output, revised version, and rationale together so the improvement can be assessed rather than assumed.

Illustrative annotation · To be paired with actual work

“The title is visible. The reading order is not.”

Observation: The main title, guest name, and segment label have similar size and contrast, competing for attention.

Impact: A viewer scanning on a phone cannot quickly identify the segment or speaker.

Correction: Establish a dominant title, reduce the secondary label, and test the revised frame at mobile size. Keep all text clear of platform overlays.

03 / About Will

Learning, storytelling,
and visual craft.

I'm Will Benninghoff, an instructional designer, content creator, and podcaster based in Tampa. My work spans community programming, historical storytelling, visual identity, and AI-assisted creative projects.

As executive producer and host of Happy Hour @ The Balboa Yacht Club, I work at the intersection of content and presentation. Projects such as AI Producer Hub and Social Hold’em extend my interest in how people learn and act within a designed experience.

My Canal Zone background gives much of my storytelling a personal foundation. Across formats, the goal stays practical: help people see the story, understand the information, and know what to do next.
